Portugal enacts ‘burqa law’ banning face coverings in public spaces
- Portugal has enacted a law banning clothing that conceals the face in public spaces, with fines ranging from €150 to €3,000.
- The law was proposed by the far-right Chega party, but was changed to apply generally to face coverings rather than specifically to Islamic dress.
- Parliament approved the law in July, and President António José Seguro signed it into law on 18 August.
- The law allows exemptions for health, work, art, weather and places of worship, while critics warn it could fuel Islamophobia and mainly affect Muslim women.
