Social media access may be blocked for under-16s in New Zealand
- On August 24, New Zealand announced an Online Safety Bill aimed at banning social media access for children under 16.
- Platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat and Facebook would have to take reasonable steps to verify users’ ages.
- Age checks could use account data, facial age estimation, digital ID services or formal identification documents.
- Platforms that fail to comply could face penalties of up to 10% of global revenue, with a new regulator enforcing the rules.
