South Korean man arrested in Japan for overstaying visa by 33 years
- A 72-year-old South Korean man was arrested in Japan for allegedly overstaying a 15-day tourist visa by more than 26 years.
- He entered Japan in September 1993 using his brother’s passport and reportedly stayed to find better-paying work.
- The man, who lives in Shizuoka, told police he had been doing day jobs and admitted to the overstay charge.
- Police arrested him after receiving a tip in June; Japan had 68,488 visa overstayers as of January 2026, down sharply from 2,98,646 in 1993.
