Study warns western Himalaya faces greater snow loss
- A new study titled 'Vulnerability of the Himalayan Region under Climate Change,' published in the Journal of Earth System Science, found the western Himalaya warming faster than the rest of the range.
- Researchers analysed 120 years of temperature records, from 1901 to 2020, and used eight climate models to project warming up to 2100.
- The western region is expected to face stronger warming and greater loss of spring snow, especially if global greenhouse-gas emissions remain high.
- Researchers warn that reduced snow cover could affect glaciers, river water availability and mountain ecosystems, making emission cuts important for limiting future damage.
