Supreme Court makes HC approval mandatory to withdraw election criminal cases
- Supreme Court on August 17 ruled High Court approval is mandatory before election criminal cases against candidates can be withdrawn.
- The ruling arose from a 2014 Bellary Lok Sabha bye-election cash-for-votes case involving candidate Prathik Parasrampuria.
- The court also cited Election Commission data showing 7,33,354 FIRs were registered during the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
- It directed authorities to report seizures within 24 hours and complete investigations within one year, with compliance due by November 18, 2026.
