Tamil Nadu to release Mettur water on September 1 after delay
- Tamil Nadu will release water from Mettur Reservoir on September 1, for Cauvery delta irrigation after a delay from the usual June schedule.
- The water release will continue for 45 days, depending on reservoir storage and inflows, to support farmers preparing for Samba cultivation.
- The delay happened due to low southwest monsoon rainfall, limited water storage and reduced inflows from Karnataka reservoirs amid the Cauvery water dispute.
- At the start of the 2026–27 irrigation year, Mettur had only 41.223 TMC Thousand Million Cubic feet of usable water, forcing the state to balance drinking water needs and agricultural demand.
