The ₹0 deal behind one of India’s biggest brand names
- In 1947, Kareem Deen, a small businessman, was preparing to leave for Pakistan. Before he left, he gave away something that would later become one of India’s biggest brand names.
- Om Prakash Munjal, whose family was starting a bicycle-parts business, had asked to use Deen’s trade name. Deen agreed instantly, asking for no money or paperwork.
- The name was Hero. Decades later, it became one of the biggest names in the global two-wheeler industry.
- Munjal’s brother Brijmohan Lall eventually turned that small bicycle-parts business into Hero, the world’s largest two-wheeler maker.
