Twenty years of trying, and Oxford Street is finally car-free
- Almost a kilometre of London’s Oxford Street went permanently traffic-free on Monday, after two decades of attempts.
- • Buses, cars, taxis, cycles and scooters are all banned on the stretch between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street.
- The first phase costs £150 million, funded by borrowing. Sixteen bus routes have been diverted.
- Disability groups and black cab drivers say the ban makes access harder for disabled passengers.
