Uber launches autonomous rides in Zagreb, its first in Europe
- Zagreb, Croatia, has become the first European city where Uber users can book a self-driving ride directly through the Uber app.
- The service is being launched by Uber, Croatian autonomous-mobility startup Verne, and Chinese self-driving company Pony.ai.
- Uber and Pony.ai recently announced plans to deploy more than 2,000 robotaxis across Europe, expanding beyond Zagreb into four additional, as-yet-unnamed European cities.
- The Zagreb launch comes as companies such as Waymo, Tesla and Amazon's Zoox expand commercial autonomous ride services, increasing competition in the emerging robotaxi market.
