Andhra Pradesh launches India’s first non-GMO popcorn hybrid
- Vice President CP Radhakrishnan launched India’s first non-GMOGenetically Modified Organism high-expansion popcorn maize hybrid seed at Musunuru in Andhra Pradesh’s Eluru district.
- India has long depended on imported hybrid technology for premium popcorn maize, and the new indigenous seed is meant to reduce that dependence and save foreign exchange.
- The seed was developed through the Gourmet Popcornica initiative, which works with more than 17,500 farmers across eight states covering nearly 40,000 acres.
- The project aims to strengthen local seed development, improve farmer market access and help Indian popcorn maize compete in global markets.
