Apple’s $1.6-billion Q.ai acquisition brings technology that can detect whispered or mouthed words using facial movements

Technology

  • Apple acquired Israeli startup Q.ai in January for a reported $1.6 billion, its second-biggest deal after Beats.
  • Q.ai's technology reads "facial skin micromovements" to work out words that are whispered or only mouthed.
  • Its 2025 patent filing also describes using those micromovements to identify a person and gauge emotion, heart rate and breathing.
  • Q.ai founder Aviad Maizels previously sold his startup PrimeSense to Apple in 2013, and its technology later helped develop Face ID.
