Delhi HC rules live-in relationship is akin to marriage — parents cannot interfere or threaten
- Delhi HC ruled on August 13 that a live-in relationship between consenting adults is legally akin to marriage.
- The court granted police protection to a couple in their 30s whose woman's father and brother had been threatening them with violence.
- Justice Banerjee said no parent, relative or friend has any right to interfere with or threaten a consenting live-in couple.
- Live-in relationships already have legal sanctity under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005, the court noted.
