India gets dialogue partner status in UK-Japan-Italy sixth-generation fighter jet project
- India has joined the UK, Japan and Italy-led sixth-generation fighter jet programme as a ‘dialogue partner’.
- The programme, known as Tempest, is developing a next-generation fighter jet and received $6.1 billion in funding for its design phase.
- The status allows India to discuss the jet’s technology, capabilities and progress, but does not make it a buyer or developer.
- The Tempest is scheduled for induction by 2034, while India is separately developing its fifth-generation AMCA fighter.
