India gets set to build its own smartphone giant like Samsung, Vivo and Xiaomi
- India launched a Rs 62,500 crore scheme to build homegrown smartphone brands, targeting the first by mid-2027.
- India makes 99.2% of phones used locally, but Samsung, Vivo, Xiaomi and Oppo dominate with no big Indian brand.
- Indian brands like Micromax, Lava, Intex and Karbonn held 35% share around 2015 before Chinese rivals pushed them below 1%.
- Lava is seen as the top candidate, growing 40-50% yearly with plans to invest Rs 1,100 crore in components.
