India produces more onions than it needs. So why are prices still rising?
- Onion prices touched Rs 60 per kg in some markets despite India producing 307 lakh tonnes, above its own needs.
- Unseasonal March-April rain trapped moisture in the crop, causing rot in storage during humid months.
- Losses jumped from the usual 25% to nearly 40%, wiping out an estimated 110 to 120 lakh tonnes.
