India tightens sugar stocks amid 10% price rise ahead of festive demand
- India on Wednesday tightened sugar stockholding limits to 15 days for bulk dealers, effective September 1 to November 30.
- Sugar prices rose 10% over the past month to Rs 5,400-5,500 per quintal, with retail prices up 13% to Rs 52.30 per kg.
- Opening stocks for 2026-27 season are estimated at 40-42 lakh tonnes, below the domestic requirement of 50 lakh tonnes.
- The government had last month limited stocks to 30 days but prices kept rising ahead of the festive season demand.
