Jamshedpur rocks reveal Earth's oldest known microbial life
- Geologist Trisrota Chaudhuri and her team found Earth's earliest lifeforms, dated to 3.5 billion years old, in Jharkhand.
- The find was made at the Singhbhum Craton near Jamshedpur, one of Earth's oldest surviving blocks of continental crust.
- Black-and-white bands in the rock are remnants of fossilised microbial mats where single-celled organisms once lived.
- Researchers dated 8 zircon crystals using uranium-lead ratios, confirming the rock and life evidence are the same age.
