K-drama heroines are no longer waiting to be rescued
- Older K-dramas often followed one pattern. A strong willed woman meets a cold rich man, & slowly becomes softer and more dependent on him.
- That has changed. Recent shows put women at the centre, with their choices driving the story rather than supporting a man's.
- Male leads have changed too. Instead of cold & distant, many are now cheerful, emotionally open & supportive.
- Critics note a gap though. South Korea still has one of the widest gender employment gaps among developed countries, so these shows may reflect what audiences want rather than daily reality.
