Polytechnic students protest against Telangana's SHAKTI reform
- On July 3, 2026, the Congress government in Telangana renamed its Labour Department as SHAKTI, short for Skill Human Capital and Knowledge Training Initiatives. Under it, all ITIs, Advanced Technology Centres and polytechnic colleges are being brought under Young India Skills University.
- Diploma students held a sit-down protest at the Government Polytechnic College in Suryapet against the change.
- They say a skill university framework will not get them jobs, and that it could block their path to shifting into engineering courses later.
- They want the government to withdraw the decision. The government has said the current year's admissions will not be affected.
