Presidential election in Bangladesh after 35 years
- Bangladesh is holding its first contested presidential election in 35 years, with BNP's Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir facing former army officer Oli Ahmad, nominee of the Jamaat-led opposition alliance.
- A total of 349 MPs will vote, with BNP's 247 seats giving Alamgir a decisive advantage over the alliance's 90.
- The election follows the July resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin, who quit halfway through his term after Sheikh Hasina's 2024 ouster and the interim government's tenure.
- Political scientist Ali Riaz called the vote largely symbolic, noting the president's powers are limited and the outcome already a "foregone conclusion."
