SC says giving up child due to poverty doesn’t prove sale, restores adoptive parents’ custody
- The Supreme Court ordered a two-year-old boy in Telangana to be returned to his adoptive parents, overturning a High Court order.
- The court said a biological mother giving up her child due to financial hardship does not by itself prove the child was sold.
- The Telangana government had argued that the case was linked to a wider inter-state child trafficking network and that the adoptive parents paid ₹6 lakh for the child.
- The Supreme Court clarified that its order concerns only this child and does not affect ongoing investigations into alleged trafficking of other children.
