US removes Syria from state sponsors of terrorism list after 44 years
- Back in 1979, the US labeled Syria a terrorism sponsor, blaming its then-leader for supporting armed extremist groups.
- That label stuck around for decades — through his son's rule, and even through a brutal 14-year civil war that eventually ended his son's regime.
- When new leaders took charge in Syria in December 2024, the US started warming up to the new government.
- On Monday, the US finally removed Syria from its terrorism list — leaving just Iran, Cuba and North Korea still on it.
