US teen builds model to track two diseases at once
- Alyssa Yu, a 17-year-old student at Poolesville High School in Maryland, US, created a mathematical disease model.
- Unlike traditional models that usually track one disease, her system studies two interacting infections spreading simultaneously.
- The model divides people into connected groups, then calculates how both infections spread, move and affect one another over time.
- It uses reaction-diffusion mathematics to predict outbreak hotspots and identify groups that could benefit most from vaccination.
- The model can predict outbreak hotspots and possible vaccination targets, placing Yu among 40 national science finalists.
