Why does this Kerala temple serve Onam sadya to monkeys?
- At Sasthamkotta Sree Dharma Sastha Temple in Kollam, resident monkeys are served a special Onam sadya every year as part of a long-running temple tradition.
- The feast is held on Uthradam, the day before Onam, and Thiruvonam, the main Onam day, with rice, curries and payasam served on banana leaves for the monkeys.
- The tradition began 53 years ago when Aravindakshan Nair, who started the feast, saw the temple monkeys struggling to find food during Onam.
