Why fewer caesareans in Bihar is a warning, not a win
- A caesarean is surgery to deliver a baby when normal birth becomes dangerous, in cases like obstructed labour or placental problems.
- India now has 90.6 percent of births happening in hospitals. But being in a hospital does not mean emergency surgery is available.
- In Bihar, about 13 out of every 100 babies are delivered by caesarean. In government hospitals it is fewer than 3, which suggests women needing urgent surgery may not be getting it in time.
- India now has two opposite problems. Some private hospitals do too many caesareans, while many government hospitals cannot perform them at all.
