Ladakh redirects 90 million litres of glacier water daily for irrigation
- Ladakh administration is diverting nearly 90 million litres of glacier-melt water daily from Stok village Nallah in Leh for irrigation.
- The water is being channelled into the Igoo-Phey Irrigation Canal, benefiting around 12 villages and improving irrigation for over 1,000 acres of land.
- Earlier, much of the glacier water flowed unused into the Indus River; now it is being redirected through simple diversion channels.
- The project aims to improve water security, crop output and livelihoods in Ladakh’s cold desert region.
