Telangana is switching to smart electricity meters
- All new electricity connections in Telangana will now get smart meters.
- Smart meters take readings automatically at midnight on the last day of each month and send the bill directly to consumers. Government offices must go prepaid, paying in advance like a mobile recharge.
- Telangana is not the first. Uttar Pradesh already had over 11 lakh smart meters running by 2021, and Bihar was the first to put prepaid meters in all government offices.
