World Photography Day The story behind the world’s first photograph
- French inventor Nicéphore Niépce captured the image, called View from the Window at Le Gras in 1826 or 1827 at his estate in Saint-Loup-de-Varennes, France.
- He used an early camera called a camera obscura and a process called heliography, exposing a bitumen-coated pewter plate to sunlight for several hours or possibly days.
- After the plate was cleaned, a faint image of buildings and rooftops remained, becoming the oldest known surviving permanent photograph in the world.
