AI helps planes avoid climate-warming trails in the sky
- Contrails are white trails formed behind planes when they fly through very cold, humid air at high altitudes. They can trap heat and contribute to global warming.
- Google’s AI predicts where these trails may form, so pilots can change altitude or route to avoid them.
- In tests on 2,400 American Airlines flights, AI-guided routes produced 62% fewer contrails.
- Researchers said this could cut contrail-related warming by about 69% without using much extra fuel.
