Chinese humanoid robot "Superman" claims faster peak speed than Usain Bolt

Technology

  • Unitree, a Chinese robotics company, unveiled a humanoid robot called Superman on August 17. It claims a top speed of 12.66 metres per second and a standing jump of two metres.
  • That claimed top speed edges out Usain Bolt's fastest instant during his 2009 world record run, about 12.3 m/s — and the robot's 2-metre jump beats the best human standing jump of around 1.6 metres.
  • But these are peak speeds, not race speeds — Bolt's average across his full 9.58-second world record run was 10.44 m/s, well below his own peak.
  • The company says the robot was built in just over three months. Last August, its fastest robot managed only 4.78 m/s at the World Humanoid Robot Games.
