CM Vijay pulls plug on Parandur airport, cites damage to farmland
- Tamil Nadu CM Vijay announced his TVK-led government will abandon the proposed greenfield airport at Parandur, citing damage to agricultural land and disruption to farmers' livelihoods.
- He said Chennai's existing Meenambakkam airport currently handles 30 million passengers annually, and while a new airport is needed for growing demand, it should be sited where farmland and residential areas are least affected.
- The Airports Authority of India had flagged the Parandur site as unsuitable for runway construction due to nearly 800-900 acres of water bodies in the region.
- The government is now exploring an alternative location, while also confirming plans to expand Chennai's existing airport to handle up to 45 million passengers annually by 2045.
