Japan's core inflation hits 1.8 per cent, fastest since January
- Japan spent decades fighting deflation, with interest rates held near zero to push prices up at all.
- That has turned, and consumer prices excluding fresh food rose 1.8 per cent in July, up from 1.6 in June.
- It is the fastest reading since January and the second straight month of acceleration, so the Bank of Japan is expected to act.
- Its policy rate is already at 1 per cent, and traders now expect the next rise in September rather than December.
