New Cuddalore herb species named after President Murmu
- Researchers discovered a new herb species, Leucas droupadiae, growing on coastal sand dunes in Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu, during a botanical survey.
- The plant belongs to the mint family, Lamiaceae, grows to around 15 cm, and has features such as an upright stem, fibrous roots and golden-yellow nutlets with dark markings.
- Scientists compared it with 155 known Leucas species and found enough differences to classify it as a new species, later naming it after President Droupadi Murmu.
- The species is currently listed as Data Deficient because its population and distribution are still unclear.
